Ingredients
- Wine 3 cups
- Sugar 3 tablespoons
- Water 1 cup
- Cinnamon 0.5 teaspoon
- Cloves 0.25 teaspoons
- Orange 1
Method
- Wash and slice the orange
- Combine the wine, water, sugar, cinnamon and cloves in a saucepan and place it over a medium heat
- Let the mixture heat up until it begins to simmer.
- Continue heating and sometimes mixing it until all the sugar melted
- Once the sugar melted, add the orange slices, and remove it from the heat.
Note: Serve it hot.
You can use both red and white wine for it. The amount of sugar can be adjusted, it depends on the wine used, as dry wine needs more sugar, while sweet ones barely need any sugar at all.
Fun facts: The first traces of mulled wine date back to the Roman Empire, in the year 20 AD, where it was called “Conditum Paradoxum”. To make it, the Romans put honey to boil in wine, then added spices (pepper, laurel, saffron), and dates. This mixture was then blended with better wine to soften the substance.
It was not until the 1890s that the tradition of mulled wine during the Christmas period intensified, particularly in the traditional Christmas markets in Germany, where each merchant offered mulled wine of his own making, with a label design specific to each. This healthy competition between merchants created folklore within these markets and for the end of the year festivities, which only intensified the desire of the consumers and their coming to these markets.
Today, each country adds its own specialties, which gives mulled wine very diverse and original tastes.
